Shining a Light on Solar Energy

Is solar right for you? Your co-op is here to help.
Piedmont Electric is your trusted energy provider and as such we want to help members who are considering home improvements understand how their changes will impact their bill. For members considering solar, there are several key factors to consider to ensure solar is a good fit for your home and your goals.

  • Know Before You Install
Installing solar isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Start by making your home as energy-efficient as possible. Sealing air leaks and upgrading insulation can lower your energy use—and reduce the size (and cost) of the solar system you may need. It’s also important to understand how a solar system integrates with Piedmont Electric’s grid. Most systems won’t cover 100% of your energy use, especially at night or on cloudy days. That means you’ll still rely on the grid and receive a monthly bill, including a facilities charge that helps maintain your electric infrastructure. We encourage you to consult with us early in the process. We can help review your energy use, connect you with reputable contractors and explain connection policies and incentives. • Ask the Right Questions
Ask yourself: What are my goals—saving money, reducing my carbon footprint or both? Is your home’s location and roof suitable for solar panels? What will the long-term maintenance and cost look like?
  • Want Solar Without Rooftop Panels?
Not ready for a full system? Our community solar program lets you benefit from clean, local, solar energy without installing panels on your home. For just $2.50 per panel per month, you receive monthly bill credits based on your panel’s energy production. For more about our community solar program, visit pemc.coop/community-solar.
