Bright Ideas: Lighting Up Local Classrooms with Innovation

30 Years of Investing in Educational Excellence

Since 1994, Piedmont Electric Cooperative has been investing in the future of our community through the Bright Ideas education grant program. This innovative initiative has awarded more than $650,000 to local teachers, principals and school counselors, bringing creative classroom projects to life and touching the lives of thousands of students across our service area.

The Bright Ideas program offers grants up to $2,000 to help educators turn their most innovative teaching ideas into reality. From outdoor classrooms and robotics clubs to sensory gardens and STEM labs, these grants support projects that might otherwise remain just dreams on paper. The program demonstrates our cooperative’s commitment to education and community development, recognizing that strong schools build strong communities.

What makes Bright Ideas special isn’t just the funding, it’s the ripple effect these projects create. When teachers receive support for their creative visions, students benefit from enhanced learning experiences, parents see their children’s increased engagement and the entire school community feels the positive impact.

Bright Ideas in Action

Whitney Williams is proud to announce her third Bright Ideas grant, which has reopened the Grady Brown Outdoor Classroom. The grant funded renovations for a previously neglected nature trail, along with species-identifying markers and a story walk designed for K-5 students and teachers. Research shows that outdoor education not only boosts student mental health but also enhances academic performance. The revitalized garden and nature trail provide a welcoming environment where students interact with nature, build confidence and ask questions—helping all learners, especially those who struggle in traditional classrooms.

The more inviting the space is, the more teachers will integrate outdoor learning into their lesson plans, ultimately building more experiences and vocabulary for our students. These outdoor classrooms are ideal not just for science lessons, but also for developing essential skills such as language, questioning and social-emotional learning. With the space now easy to access and use, teachers have endless opportunities to create engaging, standards-based lessons for their classes. This project is a shining example of how Bright Ideas grants make a real difference in our schools and communities, fostering both academic growth and student well-being.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Innovators, One Grant at a Time

The success stories from our Bright Ideas program demonstrate something powerful: when we invest in educators’ creativity and vision, the returns extend far beyond the classroom walls. These grants don’t just fund supplies and equipment, they fuel inspiration, foster student engagement and create lasting positive change in our schools.

As we look toward the future, Piedmont Electric remains committed to supporting educational innovation in our community.

Teachers, principals and school counselors in our service area are encouraged to visit NCBrightIdeas.com to learn more about the program and submit their applications. This year’s early bird deadline is Aug. 15 and the final deadline is Sept. 1. Winners will be announced in October.
