What are they and why do they matter?
Peak times are the times of day when people are using the greatest amount of electricity. Part of our power supply cost is determined by energy demand during peak times. If we can reduce the amount of energy used during these peak times, we can reduce Piedmont Electric’s power costs which directly impacts what members pay.
Think about energy use and peak times like cars and traffic. As more cars hit the highway at the end of the workday, the more congested the roads become.
A similar issue occurs when the temperatures outside start to rise in the summer and more people begin to crank up their air conditioning. This causes the energy demand across the cooperative to rise. Just like sitting in traffic costs drivers more money in fuel, increased demand causes co-op members’ bills to rise due to increased power supply costs.
By reducing the energy used during peak times, you help decrease the demand for energy and help lower the cost of energy your co-op is charged. It’s like taking cars off the road during rush hours so that no one sits in traffic driving up the cost of your trip!
Once you enroll in Beat the Peak, we’ll alert you by text message or email. Alerts will tell you when a peak period time is expected. Here’s an example:
“Beat the Peak: Conserve energy tomorrow between 1 – 6 p.m. Raise your thermostat at least 3 degrees.”
During these peak times, you have the power to plan your energy conservation measures.
- Adjust the thermostat by at least 3 degrees (up in the summer)
- Postpone hot water use
- Delay using major appliances (dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryer)
- Turn off unneeded lights or appliances
