What Co-op Membership Means

Made for the people, by the people

Welcome to our electric cooperative! Whether you’re new or returning, we’re excited to have you with us. Experience the benefits of our collaborative approach through interactions with our team and updates from our newsletter. Discover key aspects of your membership and what it means to be a valued member-owner of our cooperative.

The cooperative difference

When you reach out, you will talk to somebody local. All Piedmont employees live and/or work in your area. Simply put, we’re your neighbors and are always ready to assist. No question or request is too big or too small for us. We’re here to connect with you through your preferred communication method, whether that’s chatting on our website, speaking on the phone or emailing at your convenience.

We deeply value our members and your feedback is essential to us. Occasionally, you may receive a survey about your experience. This is part of our commitment to continuously improving the service we provide to you and our entire membership.

Cooperative principles

As a co-op, we are committed to seven principles that guide us as we provide the highest-quality service to our members.

  1. Voluntary and Open Membership – we serve anyone that moves into our service territory without discrimination.
  2. Democratic Member Control – our members vote for our board of directors who are made up of members just like you who live and understand our community.
  3. Members’ Economic Participation – any revenue exceeding expenses are paid back to members – we call those margins capital credits.
  4. Autonomy and Independence – we are a self-governing organization controlled by its members allowing us to fit our members’ specific needs.
  5. Education Training and Information – we provide education and training to our members, elected representatives and employees to contribute to the development of the cooperative.
  6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives – we have mutual-aid agreements with other electric cooperatives across the country to assist one another after a major outage.
  7. Concern for Community – we offer a wide range of youth and community programs to strength the community we all live and work in.

Capital Credits

As a not for profit utility, we do not earn profits like other businesses do. Any margins or revenue remaining after all expenses have been paid are returned to the members. The amount you get back is based on the usage of the service you received from the co-op. Check out the FAQs and easy to read graph here.

Board of Directors

We are proud to be a member-led and member-owned organization. The only stakeholders here are you! We value our members’ input to create a cooperative that is sculpted to work for our community.

Each spring, you have the opportunity to vote in our board elections via mail-in and online balloting. You also have the opportunity to serve on the board! Each district is up for election in staggered three-year terms. Check out the requirements here.

Our board meets every month to support our commitment to making decisions in the best interest of our members and cooperative. You can view the meeting summaries on our website. We provide big updates in the monthly newsletter.
