Renting? You can still save energy!

Renter Energy Saving Tips

Use energy-efficient light bulbs

Those old incandescent bulbs may be cheaper at the store than LEDs, but incandescent bulbs have a shorter life and cost more to use. Replacing just the five most frequently used lights in your apartment with ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs can save more than $65 a year in energy costs. And when you move out, you can always take the energy efficient bulbs with you, saving you money at your next place too!

Buying LEDs? Make sure you send us your receipt for a $1 rebate on each bulb, up to $15 a year. Simply mail your receipt with your name, phone number, address and account number on it to:

Use the COLD setting on your laundry

Hot water heating accounts for about 90 percent of the energy your machine uses to wash clothes. Most detergents can dissolve in cold water, and your clothes won’t fade as quickly.

Replace air filters every 1–3 months

Many renters don’t realize that it’s their responsibility to change the air filters in their apartments. Dirty air filters make your heat and air conditioning system work harder to circulate air, which makes your bill more expensive.

Only use fans when you’re in the room

Many people believe that fans help heat or cool a room. But the truth is that they only help cool people, not rooms. So when you leave a room, don’t forget to turn it off!

Check windows and doors for drafts

Test your windows for a snug fit, especially if you live in an older unit. Buy weather stripping or ask your building manager to fill the gap if air comes through. Also invest in a door draft stopper for doors that lead to outside or non-air conditioned spaces.
