From Hillsborough to Capitol Hill: Local Students Attend Youth Tour in Washington D.C.

In the quaint town of Hillsborough, two bright sparks, Cyani and Moorea, ignited a journey of a lifetime as they represented Piedmont Electric at the 2024 Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. Sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and electric cooperative across the nation, this prestigious tour wasn’t just about sightseeing—it was a power-packed week where learning met fun in the heart of the nation’s capital.

Earlier this June, Cyani and Moorea delved into a whirlwind of experiences. They stood in awe before the majestic U.S. Capitol, met with elected officials, and explored iconic landmarks like the National Mall and Arlington Cemetery. It wasn’t just about the monuments; it was about immersing themselves in the rich history that shapes our nation.

The journey began with National Youth Day, a stirring kickoff where students from rural America converged to celebrate the essence of electric cooperatives. Here, they heard from inspiring speakers and learned about their pivotal role in our democracy—an eye-opening experience that fueled their sense of community and civic duty.

By the end of the trip, these adventurous students had toured an array of museums, from the classic Smithsonian Museums to the cutting-edge Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum, and even enjoyed a show at the Kennedy Center, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Since its inception in the 1950s, the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has welcomed nearly 50,000 students from rural America, growing from a humble start to a nationwide gathering of over 2,000 students annually. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of curiosity and camaraderie that defines this exceptional program.

As Cyani and Moorea returned home from this trip of a lifetime, they embodied the spirit of youth eager to learn, grow, and make a difference.
