When you think of peak energy use, you might picture sweltering summer afternoons with air conditioners running full blast. But did you know January and February are also peak months for energy use?

During the coldest days of winter, energy demand rises sharply, especially in the early mornings when many of us turn up the heat, take hot showers and start our day. These busy times create what’s called a “peak period,” when electricity use across our entire system is at its highest. During the winter, these occur from 6-10 a.m. on weekdays.
Why Peak Times Matter
Part of our power supply cost is determined by energy demand during peak times. If we can reduce the amount of energy used during these peak times, we can reduce Piedmont Electric’s power costs, which directly impacts what members pay. We can work together to reduce energy use during peak times, which will help keep costs down for all members. Sign up for Beat the Peak to get alerts about peak times, shift your energy use and help us reduce costs. Visit pemc.coop/beat-the-peak to learn more.

How You Can Help
- Preheat your home gradually leading up to 6 a.m. weekdays and then cut your heating back from 6-10 a.m. Monday through Friday.
- Delay using large appliances like your washer, dryer, dishwasher or oven until after the peak period. If you need to use them, use them at different times, not all at once.
- Install a timer on your water heater or reduce your use of hot water.
- Make sure your electric vehicle is fully charged before 6 a.m. weekdays.
