Steve Hamlin’s journey to Piedmont Electric Cooperative is a testament to adaptability and a deep commitment to service. Born in 1956 in Colonial Heights, Virginia, Steve’s early years were shaped by a strong foundation in education and a drive to excel. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA, in 1978, armed with a degree that would set the stage for a distinguished career in accounting and finance.
Following his graduation, Steve moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he spent five years in public accounting, eventually earning his CPA designation. His career path took him through various roles that honed his expertise and leadership skills. Steve served as Internal Audit Director at The Record Bar in Durham, an Internal Auditor at Leith Inc. in Raleigh and as Controller at Dixie Forming & Building Specialties, Inc., also in Raleigh. These roles prepared him for the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead.
In August 1999, Steve faced a significant turning point when the company he worked for was acquired by a larger corporation, which relocated its accounting operations to Orlando. Unwilling to leave the area he had come to love in North Carolina, where he was raising his family, Steve began looking for local opportunities. He learned of an opening at Piedmont Electric for an Accounting Manager. Despite knowing nothing about electric cooperatives, Steve interviewed for the position and secured the job.
Steve’s journey with Piedmont Electric began modestly, but his talent and dedication quickly propelled him to greater heights. Within his first year, he was promoted to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Piedmont Electric and Wake Electric concurrently. Steve held the CFO position for nearly two decades, demonstrating unwavering commitment and leadership. In 2016, he stepped into the role of President and General manager.
Throughout his tenure, Steve witnessed and contributed to significant changes in the industry. He noted how increased member expectations and technological advancements reshaped business operations. “In my time with the co-op, new innovations such as outage notifications, electric vehicles, and smart meters have transformed how Piedmont Electric serves its members,” Steve remarked.
He emphasizes the importance of continuing to leverage technology to enhance grid infrastructure and align with the co-op’s Brighter Future vision. His belief in providing reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective power has guided his decisions and actions throughout his career. “Steve’s leadership and dedication have left an enduring mark on Piedmont Electric and the broader community, establishing a robust foundation for further growth and success,” remarked Piedmont Electric Board Chair Randy Kinley.
Nearly 30 years later, Steve proudly passes the torch to Jordan Overbee, who will lead Piedmont Electric into its next chapter as President and General Manager.
