Shift Your Use to Save More This Summer

As summer temperatures rise, so does the demand for electricity and when we use energy can matter just as much as how much we use. You’ve heard your co-op talk about “energy demand” or “peak times.” Simply put, demand is the amount of electricity being used at a specific moment, not just the total you use over time. Think of it like driving a car. Your total energy use is like the miles on your odometer and demand is like your speed: how fast you’re using electricity at any given time.
What are Peak Times?

Peak times are when the most members are using electricity at the same time, typically weekday afternoons from 1–6 p.m. during the summer, when air conditioners are running and households are most active.

When demand is high across the cooperative, it creates a surge like rush hour traffic on a busy highway.

Why Demand Matters to You

Piedmont Electric’s largest expense is the cost of power we purchase to serve our members and that cost depends not only on how much energy is used, but how much is needed at one time.

During peak periods, electricity is more expensive to supply, the system experiences more strain and costs for the co-op increase.

Because we’re a not-for-profit cooperative, those costs ultimately affect all members. But the good news is that when we reduce peak demand together, we help lower costs for everyone.

The Power of Timing

Shifting when you use electricity can make a real difference. In fact, members on our time-of-day rate can save money simply by using energy outside peak hours, with the average member saving more than $10 per month.

Even if you’re not on a special rate, using energy during off-peak times helps reduce overall demand and supports a more efficient, reliable grid.

How You Can Help “Beat the Peak”

Small changes at home can have a big impact:

  • Run dishwashers and laundry early in the morning or later in the evening
  • Raise your thermostat a few degrees during peak hours
  • Pre-cool your home before the hottest part of the day
  • Avoid running multiple large appliances at the same time

Spreading out your energy use reduces strain on the system while using the same total amount of electricity.

Working Together for Lower Costs

At Piedmont Electric, we’re always looking for ways to keep power affordable and reliable. Managing peak demand is one of the most effective ways to do that and it’s something every member can be part of. When you shift your energy use, you can save more this summer.
